iBD North Star™

Definition

The iBD North Star™ is the owner’s personal definition of what winning looks like — expressed in concrete, measurable terms across time, cash flow, and wealth. It is not a vision statement or a set of corporate goals. It is a specific, quantified answer to the question: “What does my life look like when this business is working the way I want it to?”

The North Star includes three components: a time and role target (hours per week, type of work), a cash flow target (annual income from all sources, with ownership distributions as the primary vehicle), and a wealth target (net worth and enterprise value required to sustain the cash flow target indefinitely).

Why This Matters for Owners

Without a North Star, every business decision is evaluated against whatever feels most urgent. With a North Star, every decision can be filtered through a single question: “Does this move me closer to or further from my ownership goals?”

The North Star is what makes the Owner’s Scorecard™ possible. It provides the destination coordinates that the scorecard tracks against. It is also the input that drives the Value Growth Plan™ — you can’t build a plan to close the gap if you haven’t defined where the gap leads.

How It Works

The North Star is built in Module 1 across three milestones: time and role goals (Milestone 1), cash flow targets (Milestone 2), and net worth and valuation targets (Milestone 3). Once established, it becomes the fixed reference point that the owner checks against at every quarterly boardroom meeting.

The North Star doesn’t change often. It is the owner’s personal definition of Independence Escape Velocity™ — the specific numbers that constitute “enough.”
