Visionary-Integrator Framework
The role-split between the owner who generates ideas + direction (Visionary) and the operator who turns those into systematic execution (Integrator). Popularized by Rocket Fuel (Wickman + Winters) + EOS / Traction. Critical for owner role design — most trapped owners are playing BOTH roles simultaneously.
One-line working definition
Every business needs both a Visionary (generates ideas, drives direction, builds relationships, takes risks, sees around corners) and an Integrator (systematizes execution, manages operations, holds team accountable, runs the day-to-day). Most owner-operators try to be both. The trap is there because one person cannot sustain both roles effectively over time.
Why this matters for owners
Owner-operators who are natural Visionaries (most founders) often default to holding the Integrator role because “no one else can do it as well.” The result: Visionary work suffers (no time for strategy, partnerships, big opportunities) + Integrator work suffers (owner is too distracted by Visionary pulls to execute systematically). The business fails at both jobs simultaneously.
The Role Vision Board Exercise uses this framing to ask owners: “Are you designed for Visionary, Integrator, or split? In Year 5, which role do you WANT to hold exclusively — and who takes the other?”
How it connects to M01 Role Vision Board + The Owner-Operator Trap™
Escaping the Owner-Operator Trap structurally requires splitting the Visionary + Integrator roles between two people. Most owners are natural Visionaries who need to HIRE an Integrator (typically COO-level) by Year 2-3 of their M01 Role Vision Board. The hire IS the trap exit event.
